Comments: Okay I will start with the bad points just to get them out of the way. One thing, there was a few spots where double words showed up. Example: I will will be going with you. It is a simple editing problem just needs a good once over. Another thing there was a lot of telling of the story over showing. I did a lot of this in my first book. It distracted me a couple times, but for the most part it didn’t bother me.

Now for the good stuff!

I really liked the story and I was pulled into the characters lives. The ending was a tad predictable, but still enjoyable. It is an epic journey of good vs evil on a world full of hidden magics. I like the use of the phoenix as the source of the magic and its role it plays on the world. I liked the mystery of the stones and the power they contain. Slowly throughout the story the stones powers come into play and the characters use of that power. It seemed like a good balance through the story. I gave 5 stars for the use of characters. It’s just my opinion, but I really liked them and felt a connection. I believe a good book is one that entertains you, that is the most important thing over everything else. Gift of the Phoenix entertained me.

I give it 3 1/2 stars overall

IMO: A good book that I think people would enjoy.

Game of Thrones Season 3

game_of_thrones_season_3_premiere_poster_dinklage

4 and half stars

I would have to say Game of Thrones Season 3 is keeping me glued to my seat. Peter Dinklage is my favorite actor in the series. I kinda wish I had read the books before I started watching the series, but since I am already through the first two seasons and deep into the third, I don’t think I will be reading them. (It’s just my thing.) Okay on to the review…

The story, the actors and the movie backgrounds, all top notch. At first I thought I wouldn’t like it, but now I sincerely love it! I like the way there are a great number of kings, each area has their own ruler. All the areas have a king, but there is 1 king that rules over all of them and it seems, all want the throne for themselves. Lots of deception, lots of hatred between the clans or houses as they are called. Sometimes it is hard to follow, but if you follow it closely it all pans out.

I give it 4 1/2 stars…5 stars if it was easier to follow.

Review of The Long Walk by Stephen King

Story:

Comments:

The Long Walk starts out a story of a group of boys entering a contest. Each one must out walk the others and keep on walking till only one remains. That last walker gets his hearts desire, any wish is fulfilled. Doesn’t sound like Stephen King does it? Lol He always has a twist, something to blast your mind and your thoughts wrap around his storyline like a boa squeezing its prey. In a regular contest if you couldn’t walk any farther you just bow out. In the long walk if the boys slow down too much they get a warning, if they get three warnings the soldiers following the group raise their rifles until the forth, there is no warning. You buy a ticket. Yes you heard me right you buy a ticket, the soldiers pull the trigger and the walker dies. Only one walker makes it to the end the rest die.

Now before you brow beat me you learn that almost immediately in the book. Now I can walk a long way, I think most of us can, but not without resting or stretching.  The soldiers give you a warning every thirty seconds so there is no resting. You have to keep a steady pace which the soldiers monitor also, if you slow down too much you get a warning. How long could you walk if you couldn’t stop to rest or even slow down. The fear of death is a good motivator, you would keep on walking because you had to. The story turns to the lives of several walkers and their struggles through the walk. Some form friendships and have their little groups and others are loners. Stephen King digs deep into their emotions along the way, emotions and thoughts like “Why did I do this?” The contestants are not forced to enter, each one has to pass a physical and a mental evaluation. If they get picked, it was because they wanted to be in the race, so why did they enter? That is the storyline, why. What would drive you to enter a contest that only one person would survive. Money? Fame?

The story progresses, diving into their lives before the race and through the race. Dealing with the people around them getting shot on a regular basis, which only heightens the fear of their own death. Its a long walk through life in a short span of time. I work in a nursing home and I see the end of peoples lives. They way he describes some of the people turning into mindless walking zombies, walking on will alone. Their faces become blank and lifeless, their eyes stare off into nothingness. It creeped me out because the way he described it reminded me of the despair I see in the elderly. Some of them stare right through you as if they can see into the beyond.

I gave this book 4 1/2 stars, it would have been 5 but I think the end could have been different. Not better because I understand why he ended it the way he did, IMO the end should have been a bit longer and in more detail. As in most Stephen King books he ends it this way. It usually bugs me but he is still my favorite writer and I have become accustomed to it.

Hollowland Review

hollowland

4-star-rating

Synopsis: 

Hook: 

Characters:

Storyline:

Descriptions:

Comments: I really enjoyed Hollowland. I like the alternative zombie story, they are infected with a rabies type virus. I like the stories that come as close as possible to something that could really happen. I bonded with some of the characters and others kinda fell flat. Overall I would recommend reading this book IMO it is a good read.

Spoiler alert: Okay this book is about Remy a young girl thrown into a world of flesh eating zombies. She is in a quarantine area when it is over run. She goes across the US in search of her brother and picks up some stragglers. She is forced by situation to become the leader of their group and their protector. Her only thought is to make it to her brother which was taken to another quarantine to the north. She also finds a lion which the group adopts as their zombie eating mascot. They have to fight, kill and survive long enough to make it there. Remy doesn’t want to be the groups protector and tries to leave them later in the book. She’s only a 19 yr old girl and has to act like an adult/soldier/leader. In a screwed up would where law no longer exists everyone has to grow up quick. At the end they make it to the next quarantine area and she is able to briefly be a young girl and falls in love. It’s short lived, only 1 night, before she goes to save her brother and in return becomes a prisoner herself.

Hollowland

The next book I will review is Hollowland by Amanda Hocking. I like the post apocalyptic novels and I like the way she makes the zombies as infected instead of walking dead. I had the same idea bet never wrote about it. I have also discovered audio books, if your like me and can’t read for very long because it bothers your eyes then they are for you. I just got a subscription for 1 book a month, but no indie yet. Follow to get updates on new reviews and thanks for all the comments.

A Zombie Tale (Chapter 2)

A Zombie Tale

by

Steven Vaughn

Chapter 2

The Zombie Dance

Samantha put the camcorder in the closet and hung a note on its strap which read, “To find out what happened press play.” She then closed the door and gathered what was left of her food. She messed up her hair and rubbed dirt on her face and clothes. I hope my theory works. If I look enough like them and act like them, I might be able to get to a car.

She stuffed the food in her shirt and waited till she could no longer hear any commotion outside her door.  It smelled like smoke and she could feel heat on the door. This is my chance. Maybe they will be distracted so I can get away.

Samantha quickly unlocked the door and swung it open. The fire was spreading down the hallway, filling the air with smoke. The crazies dropped on the floor flopping around, trying to gasp for breath. Sam put a towel over her face and made a mad dash for the stairs. The crazies couldn’t remember how to do some tasks like open doors, so she felt that the stairs would be safe.

She closed the door behind herself and leaned against it. The stairwell was free of smoke so she removed the towel from her face. As she took in a deep breath, the smell of burnt flesh from the hallway overtook her and she sprayed vomit across the wall. There was a loud clawing sound on the door and screams of pain echoed through the stairwell.

Sam wiped her mouth with the towel and then forced herself up. She made her way down the stairs looking over the rail for signs of movement. The door at the bottom of the stairs was cracked open slightly, just enough for her to see salvation. A pickup truck was sitting in the grass with its driver hanging out the door. God please let the keys be in there! 1…2…3!

The door creaked heavily as she pushed it open. Several crazies turned too look where the sound came from. Samantha played her role as a whacked out zombie by screaming and running for the truck. When she got to the truck, she started pulling the dead body out of the drivers seat. His foot became logged behind the break and wouldn’t pull free.

Sam yelled, “Oh god please! You got to be kidding me! Arrrrrrrrr!”

Several crazies turned to look at Sam, cocking their heads like a dog. Two of them broke away from the heard and started running at the truck.

“Oh god no! Oh god no!” She dropped the body and the leg made a loud “snap!” She wrestled with the leg, bending it in unnatural positions. It popped and snapped as she forced the foot out from behind the brake pedal.

The two crazies ran faster, their eyes wide open and their mouths dripped with saliva. They quickly closed in on the truck, their arms stretched out in front of them.

Sam threw the leg out of her way and climbed into the cab. She shut the door on one of their hands, crushing it. She held on to the door as best she could while the crazy man yanked his arm trying to free his hand. In a desperate move she opened it slightly and then yanked it closed after the crazy man freed his hand. It screamed in agony while staring at the broken bones protruding from open wounds. Quickly the wounds healed and the bones reset inside its hand. Sam stared in awe, she never seen one heal before.

The two started banging on the truck’s window scaring Sam and bringing her back to reality. She searched the cab for the keys, “Oh god please let them be in here!” The crazies hit the window over and over till it cracked, making her scream out loud. Sam leaned her head on the steering wheel about to cry when she seen the end of a key laying on the floor under the gas pedal.

Quickly she grabbed it and shoved it into the ignition. As she turned the key, the two crazies broke through the window and grabbed her shirt. She threw it in drive and yelled, “Get off me!” as she mashed down on the gas pedal. One dropped off right away but the second one held on tight. She drove through the grass dragging it behind her as her shirt pulled tighter around her arm. It pinched down so tight she started losing feeling.

She turned slightly and aimed right for a small tree. Just as she was about to hit it she swerved and let the crazy man take the full impact of the tree, forcing it to release its grip. Chunks of its skin was imbedded in the broken glass of the window. Sam rubbed her arm as she sped off down the road.

“I made it I’m free!”
